My grandma was nagging at me the other day about always being glued to my touch/phone/lappy and not doing anything productive with my life. It was pretty annoying because I was busy stalking people on Facebook (go figure!) and there she was chattering away about the harmful effects of radiation-which she heard about while watching the news on tv, btw-so I just ignored her and did my own thing.
But now upon reflection, I think she did have a point.
In this era, almost everyone lives on technology. Kids, teenagers, working adults...and even senior citizens, because whether is it playing mobile games or watching 1000-episode dramas on tv, you're still considered a user of technology. And if you don't use ANY social networking sites or communication apps, you're probably in your sixties. Like, not having Whatsapp for a long time while others were raving about it made me feel like some social pariah lagging behind the times but anyway I digress.
The thing is, it's so hard to live without technology and we're all practically slaves to it. Just blogging this post is already a testament to the fact that our lives have become so intertwined with things like the Internet, personal computers, hand-held devices etc. For someone like my grandma who has never used a computer in her entire life and still struggles with using the house phone, how weird would it be to see everyone being immersed in their own virtual world all the time? How did people in the past manage to keep in contact with one another, solve daily life problems and basically do everything they need to do without having to rely so heavily on technology?
I think it would be scary to live in this world like sixty years from now and see for your own eyes how rapidly the world has changed. Right now with 3G and all that, people are always using their iPhones wherever they go-whether is it while waiting at the bus stop, while travelling on the bus, or while walking home after alighting. Can you imagine life in the future with even more such inventions?
I'm not saying technology is bad. It's great, I love the entertainment, convenience and ease of comunication it brings us, plus I don't think I can live without it presently. I just think that I understand my grandma's thinking a bit better now (crap).
