Story of a Book Giveaway Addict

I think it's probably no secret by now that I love giveaways.
Not just any random giveaway, but rather, specifically BOOK giveaways!
The thrill lies not just in winning, but also in the process of entering a giveaway. I kind of like, hyperventilate a little in my seat whenever I take part in one. When I discover this new, INTERNATIONAL contest I haven't participated in, I feel this weird surge of adrenaline, as if someone just shoved a bowl of hot laksa right in front of me and I HAVE to pounce on this chance and dig in!
As you can probably tell, I'm hopelessly infatuated with anything that promises a freebie. I never buy books on my own, even when I badly want to, so I'm particularly infatuated with anything that promises a free book.
So let me describe in further detail how my obsession with these giveaways work!
If the giveaway asks for just a name and email, that's like super easy because it just takes a minute to enter. But that also means hundreds of other people would find it equally easy to take part too! So most of the time, you either find blogs with fewer readers, or you do extra entries, like following the blog via GFC, following on Twitter, tweeting and whatnot. And these are freaking time-consuming-as the saying goes, "There's no free lunch in the world". It's hard work you know, the price you have to pay if you really want to win it!
Needless to say, the following days/weeks are filled with excited anticipation and impatient waiting. When the day the winner is revealed comes by, you can't help but check your inbox obsessively all day long, though chances are the blogger will only notify you the next day. Or even later, like two weeks afterward, which really did happen to me. Not that I'm complaining...the surprise makes it even better!
If you are lucky enough to win, the happiness makes you feel like doing a victory dance and jump around squealing like some lunatic :D The words "Congratulations...Giveaway Winner!" in the email title usually sends me into a euphoric, slightly-crazed state. It's probably not very safe to go near me during this period. Then comes the troubling part-which book do I choose!? This involves alot of careful deliberation on which book I've been yearning for and which one is more worth the while. Duing this tedious but exciting process, I would have to make references to my reading list, check book prices on Book Depository (the popular online bookstore for bloggers doing international giveaways, because they have free international shipping) and also annoy friends to no end (hehe sorry lah). Sometimes I even resort to drawing lots in the end out of sheer desperateness. You see, even winning a giveaway needs thinking!!
And then you wait. You wait until the book will finally ship over, and during this time, compulsively check your letter box each time you go out and return home.
But what happens if you DON'T win? Initially it used to get to me really badly. I mean, it's not like I expect to win everything. If I did, I'd have to move out of my own room because books would be arriving at my doorstep everyday, judging from the rate I'm taking part in giveaways! But knowing this doesn't reduce the disappointment and frustratin when you see some other bookgiveawayaddict's name instead of yours :/ However! After experiencing several such heartbreaks, I kind of take it in my stride and allow myself to linger on the disappointment for just a little while before moving on.
There are times when I think I'm going crazy for being so mad about giveaways. I can borrow most of the books from the library, and I don't really NEED so many of my own. But then I'd suddenly win a giveaway I took part in ages ago and all thoughts of quitting just disappears, because the only thing that goes through my head is, "One more! Just one more!" The hope is never extinguished. That's why I call it an addiction, you can't really help yourself.
I know there has to be a limit on how many books I should (try to) win because I really don't want to sleep on the streets due to lack of space. I also fully realise the time and effort I spend on giveaways could be spent more wisely-somehow I think having my nose glued to my itouch all the time isn't a good idea healthwise and all. But for now, I am, and will remain, a proud Book Giveaway Addict. It's always fun getting free things, or trying to win them at least.
Are you tempted? :D
